Next holiday?

My next short holiday is actually in November, visiting a friend of mine in London. I will probably go skiing in December with my family in either Norway, France or Austria. I have not yet made specific plans for a longer holiday, but the next longer holiday will go to Agrigento, a city on the southern coast of Sicily, and to the Pelagie Islands (Sicily); Lampedusa, Linosa and Lampione.

Agrigento

An essential travel item?

Besides my travel book and my iPhone with the Lonely Planet App I always bring my little notebook. The notebook is essential to me as I always take notes on thoughts that may influence my stories in my future novels. I travel often with my children, so suntan lotion is really essential as well as a travel book with great pictures for the children. In this way it keeps the children interested in the destination and they can relate more to the destination and the history.

Must-see destination?

As Agrigento has an extraordinarily rich archaeological legacy, I will definitely visit the Valley of the Temples, which is a large sacred area on the south side of the ancient city where seven monumental Greek temples in the Doric style were constructed during the 6th and 5th centuries BC. Also I will visit the Pelagie Islands with its pure white beaches and crystal clear sea – Rabbit Island, namely Rabbit Beach which is located in the southern part of the island and was voted the world’s best beach by travel site TripAdvisor in 2013. Another must-see destination for me is the island Isola dei Conigli where the eggs of the loggerhead sea turtles hatch out during the summer.

My favourite beach is the beach at Bamboo Island, Thailand, absolutely stunning and a piece of heaven…

Favorite beach?

The beach at San Vito Lo Capo, Sicily, is absolutely beautiful, but I my favourite beach is the beach at Bamboo Island, Thailand, absolutely stunning and a piece of heaven.

Best thing about travelling?

The best feeling about travelling is the feeling of freedom, the feeling of adventure and to be inspired in life.

Best tip for travelling with kids?

Don’t get upset if the “plan” fails, but have an open mind and remember that the children are your fellow traveler as well. Make plans that involve your children, but keep it realistic. Last summer I took my children, at the age of 6 and 3, to Pompeji and the heat was dreadful – the children found it interesting and endured the heat for 2 hours, so always keep it realistic.

Most frequent destination?

The South of France which I absolutely adore. But Italy is also becoming a frequent destination, especially the South.
